Art history involves the study of ways the visual arts reflect and shape the world's cultures. Objectives and Recommendations--The purposes of the art history curriculum are: 1) To develop students' understanding of some of the historical traditions in the visual arts. 2) To develop and improve students' ability to analyze and interpret works of art through oral and written means. 3) To help students discover the rich and complex relationship of art to other aspects of culture. 4) To encourage students to have direct contact with art by means of studio art courses, class field trips and assignments, gallery internships, and study abroad experiences. The discipline also recommends two years of college-level courses in foreign language.

Students are required to take 2 semester(s) of any second language.
No grades below C- are allowed. Courses may not be taken S-N unless offered S-N only. A minimum GPA of 2.00 is required in the major to graduate. The GPA includes all, and only, University of Minnesota coursework. Grades of "F" are included in GPA calculation until they are replaced.
